Identifying Alzheimer’s Disease and Taking Care of Those Affected by it

People sometimes take pride in taking care of their aged parents but there are instances when they get tired of their habits. One needs to look at the root cause of their habits and need to ensure why the aged are behaving in such a manner. Nobody wants to repeat the same request again and again but of late you have noticed that your father making the same requests to you repeatedly. Instead of giving you sufficient time to carry out the request, he is asking for you to perform that task each time you come face to face with him.

There are certain diseases that cause these types of behaviors in people, especially those who are 65 years or more in age and the most common of such diseases is Alzheimer’s disease. While Alzheimer’s is rarely found in young people there are 50% chances of people aged 85 and above being affected by it. This disease attacks the cells of the brain and causes various types of brain disorders including loss of memory. If your father is requesting you to perform the task again and again, chances are that he is suffering from Alzheimer’s and has forgot that he had made that request to you previously.

Many people think that loss of memory is a part of aging, but this is not correct. There are many senior citizens whose memories are far better and sharper than that of young people. Though Alzheimer’s is not specifically a hereditary disease, in rare instances it can carry over from one generation to another. Those affected by this disease will slowly find their capabilities to recognize ordinary things like people around them wearing away.

Apart from that those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease also find problems in conducting their day to day activities. At times this can become a soul wrenching problem for the other members of the family as they find their dear and beloved ones struggling to remember the simple things of life. Initially, Alzheimer’s does not attack one severely and in the early stages one might find the patient suffering from loss of memory. They also find it tough to handle day to day tasks and one might find a change in their personality and mood. Asking the same questions is another pointer that identifies that a person is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Generally the old memories are not affected as much as the recent memories of the patient suffering from this disease. If not taken care of properly, Alzheimer’s disease moves over into an advanced stage and it is here that it begins to take frightening properties. The level of memory loss is increased and the patient might not even recognize his near and dear ones. At times it has been noticed that certain patients of Alzheimer’s disease become suspicious of others and also start getting afraid of them. As of date there is no cure for Alzheimer’s but recent advances in medical science can slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Are Young People Too Affected by Alzheimer’s Disease?

There are a number of young people who are facing memory related problems. Within a few moments of conducting one task, they tend to forget it. Most of them have heard about Alzheimer’s disease and are worried if they too are affected by the same. These people should take solace from the fact that Alzheimer’s does not affect people below 60 years of age, and is generally observed in those who are 65 years and more. Even then, the disease is at its primary stages and it is only when people surpass the age of 85, does this disease, which is yet not curable, takes gargantuan proportions.

There are many other reasons due to which one can have both short term and long term memory loss and most of them are curable. It helps if people start helping themselves so that they are not affected by Alzheimer’s disease when they grow older. Most of us take recourse to inventions of modern science and do not want to exercise our brains and this, later on, assists in the growth of Alzheimer’s. There are some other myths too regarding this disease and the sooner they are dispelled, the better.

People often believe that they too will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease just because one of their parents has it. Such people should know that Alzheimer’s disease is not hereditary and there are just rare and isolated cases where a particular strain of this disease, that affects the brain cells in an irreversible and incurable manner, has affected the kids of those affected by it. The younger generation should try to exercise their brain more since this improves the power of the cells within the brain and thus prevents Alzheimer’s disease from affecting it. We have inculcated such bad habits of taking things the easy way and some of these bad habits really harm our future lives.

If there is just a small mathematical equation, we rather seek to solve it by using the calculator rather than exercise our brain cells. This is not just done. Exercising the brain is one of the major means by which we can assure that we are not affected by Alzheimer’s disease. If you have not yet started observing this simple thing, why not start today. Apart from that there are many other types of means we can use to exercise our brain. Why not try games that require remembering a sequence of colors and shapes.

This particular game helps us to increase our level of concentration thus help avoid falling prey to Alzheimer’s at a later stage. Though scientists from all over the world are trying to research more into the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and how to cure those who are effected by it, they are all of the same opinion that exercising one’s brain is one of the primary methods by which one can ensure that their brain is isolated and protected from Alzheimer’s disease at later stages of life.
